for the Patient With Diabetes

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physician assistants and nurse practitioners in primary care with patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus who are using or who may benefit from using insulin pump therapy.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The primary objective of this educational initiative is to provide clinicians in primary care with the most up-to-date information regarding the use of insulin pump therapy for patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Explain the use of long- and short-acting insulin analogs to mimic the body’s natural production and release of endogenous insulin.
  • Describe the features of currently available continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) pumps, including basal rate programming (and its adjustments), bolus calculation (including the sensitivity or correction factor), bolus history, and continuous glucose monitoring.
  • Explain the risk for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in patients with type 1 diabetes, and the contributory roles played by CSII pump malfunction and infection or other illness in the potential development of DKA.
  • Discuss the continued importance of blood glucose (finger-stick) monitoring, carbohydrate-counting, regular exercise, target blood glucose, and A1C goals in patients who use CSII pumps.

FACULTY

Alexis M. Blount, RN, MSN, MPH, FNP-BC, CDE, is a nurse practitioner in the Pediatric Endocrine Department at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Joe Largay, PA-C, CDE, practices in the outpatient clinic in the University of North Carolina Diabetes Care Center and is Director of the Diabetes Care Center’s Clinical Trials Program.

This program has been reviewed and is approved for a maximum of 1.0 hour of American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) Category I CME credit by the Physician Assistant Review Panel. Approval is valid for one year from the issue date of November 2011. Participants may submit the self-assessment at any time during that period.

This program was planned in accordance with AAPA’s CME Standards for Enduring Material Programs and for Commercial Support of Enduring Material Programs.

Successful completion of the self-assessment is required to earn Category I CME credit. Successful completion is defined as a cumulative score of at least 70% correct.
