PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The primary objective of this educational initiative is to provide clinicians in primary care with the most up-to-date information regarding the evaluation and management of patients with severe hypertension.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Explain how hypertensive urgency is differentiated from hypertensive emergency.
  • Describe the possible cardiopulmonary, central nervous system, and/or renal manifestations of hypertensive emergency.
  • Outline steps and potential findings in the history, physical examination, and laboratory testing/imaging that help the clinician identify different forms of acute end-organ damage associated with hypertensive emergency.
  • Explain the differences in managing hypertensive urgency and specific forms of hypertensive emergency, particularly in comparison with standard hypertension management recommendations.

FACULTY

Erin E. Stafford, MPAS, PA-C, is an Instructor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Scottsdale, Arizona, and a Hospital Internal Medicine PA at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix. Kristen K. Will, MPHE, PA-C, is a PA in Hospital Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic Arizona in Scottsdale and Program Director at the clinic's Postgraduate PA Fellowship in Hospital Internal Medicine; she is also adjunct faculty in the PA programs at Midwestern University, Glendale, Arizona, and A. T. Still University, Mesa, Arizona. Amber N. Brooks-Gumbert, MMS, PA-C, is an instructor at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and a PA in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hospital Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic Arizona in Scottsdale; she is also adjunct faculty at Midwestern University in Glendale.

This program has been reviewed and is approved for a maximum of 1.0 hour of American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) Category I CME credit by the Physician Assistant Review Panel. Approval is valid for one year from the issue date of October 2012. Participants may submit the self-assessment at any time during that period.

This program was planned in accordance with AAPA's CME Standards for Enduring Material Programs and for Commercial Support of Enduring Material Programs.

Successful completion of the self-assessment is required to earn Category I CME credit. Successful completion is defined as a cumulative score of at least 70% correct.
